About the Upper Yango community
The Upper Yango Valley is at the headwaters of Yango Creek, approximately eight kilometres west of the village of Laguna, in the Wollombi Valley, approximately 100 kilometres north of Sydney.
The valley is occupied by 22 private landholdings on the traditional land of the Darkinjung people. Its rich meadows were important pathways to culturally significant sites at Big Yengo, the Finchley petroglyphs and the initiation site to the south.
Today, Upper Yango is on the eastern boundary of Yengo National Park, with properties bordering public land on three sides.
In 2019, Upper Yango was devastated by the Gospers Mountain and Little L Bushfires that came out of the park.
With the aid of a State and Federal Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Funded grant (BLERF), our community has enhanced resilience by developing and implementing a comprehensive, ecologically sensitive, land, fire and emergency management programme.
This website documents our community’s activities, personal stories, scientific reports, long term strategies and community engagement.
By communicating our project outcomes, its our desire to help motivate and empower other communities, with similar needs, to formulate their own resilience initiatives.
We hope you find this website helpful in determining your own pathways to personal and environmental security, and a healthy and vibrate neighbourhood community.
