Flood Access

Private Roads and Emergency Access

Ensuring reliable access for emergency vehicles remains a critical issue across the Wollombi Valley. In Upper Yango, the intersection of council-maintained roads, private roads, tracks, and creek crossings has been a significant concern—especially during emergencies such as fires, floods, and medical incidents. While helicopters can provide assistance in some situations, vehicle access is essential.

In the aftermath of the devastating 2022 floods, which severely damaged the approaches to Finchley Causeway at the junction of Upper Yango Creek Road and Finchley Track, the council undertook substantial repairs, further strengthening the valley’s road infrastructure, ensuring greater resilience for the community.

Advocacy efforts by the UYLA and other communities have successfully secured Cessnock Council's investment in strengthening key flood-prone crossings at Cagneys Crossing and Rhino Corner. These improvements have enhanced flood resilience and prevented the isolation of communities along Upper Yango Creek Road and the broader Wollombi Valley.

Upper Yango has invested in upgrading roads and crossings to an acceptable standard, with particular attention paid to South Arm Road, which serves seven properties.
