Improving Road Signage
Good clear accurate signs are an important addition to a neighbourhood. One of the complaints during the 2019 fires was the lack of easy to follow directions.
Many of the fire crews were from outside the area, and in fact some were from outside the country. For them, navigating the back roads and private trails was challenging, as there was a general lack of street signs, place names and road numbers.
It may be some people’s preference to hide away anonymously on a back road to nowhere. But when an emergency strikes and you need help, you don’t want to be left waiting while the ambulance searches for you.
Cessnock Council has subsequently installed street signs at important intersections.
In Upper Yango, reflective road numbers have been provided to many of the landholders, while others have taken it upon themselves to improve visibility.
The occasional wildlife reminder is also something to consider.
Road signs don’t need to be expensive.
