The Importance of Road Access in Rural Communities: A Focus on Wollombi and Upper Yango Valley
In Upper Yango, the UYLA was able to invest funds in bringing roads up to a more acceptable standard.
In rural communities like the Wollombi Valley, road access is a critical health and safety issue for residents. Many roads in these areas are privately maintained, meaning they do not receive council funding for upkeep. This creates serious challenges, landholders, particularly during emergencies when residents rely on clear and safe access for emergency vehicles and evacuation.
Poorly maintained roads can delay ambulances, fire trucks and essential services, putting lives at risk. In severe weather, landslips and flooding can leave residents isolated for days or even weeks.
Without council support, residents are left to repair roads themselves, often at great expense. Acknowledging the importance of safe and reliable road access is crucial to ensuring the well-being and security of those living in more remote communities.
